I initially owned the Vantrue N5 and then upgraded to the N5s. While there’s little difference, I still like the N5s. However, the customer service is incredibly poor. Responses are slow, and the helpfulness or support seems to be more about extracting money than assisting.
Main reason for getting:
1. Remote connection - Absolutely terrible and does not work properly
2. Notification and alerts - Works when it can connect to the LTE module
3. Multi-camera views - from what I can see this works pretty well except the cabin facing back camera don't show much of anything in a SUV (not a deal breaker though)
4. Camera Tech and video quality - never got around to fully testing this, too much time spent troubleshooting 1st issue.
Originally got the camera for the remote viewing and notification.
Set it up with the LTE module and used the Vantrue free 300mb card and it worked perfectly as you would expect.
I originally set it up for motion detection and it killed the 300mb in a matter of minutes. it rain and for every minute of the rain it detected movement and sent a notification with video (its good that it work but rain movement detection?).
Remove motion and make it collision then paid for a 2Gb refill on the Vantrue sim card and the module never worked again. No connection, no detection, 1 green bar no matter where I am. After a lot of back and forth with Vanture email customer service and no resolution I decided to take a loss on the refill and get a mobile data only sim card.
Verizon nor ATT wont open an account for the LTE module so I had to open an account with T-Mobile since they seems to be the only one here to open up an account for this device. With the T-Mobile Sim the LTE module now works. I reset everything and reconnect the devices and it works like it did when I first got it... until I disconnect from the device then can no longer connect to the camera via LTE module only through close proximity WIFI.
After a long time of troubleshooting I finally come to understand that the only way I can connect to the Cam remotely through the LTE module is by resetting and deleting the camera from my profile and making a new connection. This would grant me remote connection for a short while then nothing after I disconnect.
I haven't gotten the chance to fully see nor test the quality of the video cause most of the time was spent troubleshooting and communicating with customer service. Now that the return period have expired I am now stuck with then camera that does not work as it was intended for.
So if you read this and made it to the end please be aware that although this was just my personal experience this could also happen to you so please be prepared if you decide to buy this device.
PS: The LTE module does works perfectly as a WIFI hotspot for other devices even though the camera it was made for can never seems to connect to it after the first connection.
Prodotto ottimo installato funziona tutto bene grazie
Nexus 5S with LTE is a very good Dash cam.
Wickness is to make sure your cam will be plugged in the right place to always have power.
What avec the question you have, feel free to contact the support. The team is very reactive and reliable.
This camera “feels” very heavy on first impressions and I had initial concerns about it staying attached.
No worries! The attachment system is perfect, use the included small plastic sticker first then attach the base!! And, the camera just slips into the windshield base attachment so it’s not a suction cup or a clip that you need to press. If I need to take the camera off the windshield, it simply slides up and off.
Do not try and set this up in your car! Use the included cord and plug it in for the initial set up from the comfort of your home. You’ll thank me later.
Once you go through the initial set up, be sure to turn Wi-Fi on “ALWAYS”!! If you don’t, you will not have ready access to your camera in an emergency when you need to pull video quickly for law enforcement!!!
From then on always use the App!! I’ve always disliked the awkward set up process and trying to figure out what buttons do what! So the app makes it is super easy to pull video from the camera, change settings etc!!!
Warning…it you do a firmware update. It resets everything to default! You’ll have to go back in and reset all your changes like loop recording time and turn Wi-Fi back to ALWAYS! I wish they would let your settings stay the same after a firmware update.
I also wish Vantrue would make the housing of these cameras White. They are black and get very hot from the sun. My N5 stop working and got stuck in a reboot cycle that Vantrue couldn’t figure out. I’d had it for several years and decided to toss it and get one that has an app interface.
Overall, this dashcam is a great up from the N5. It is a bit pricey…. But my old N5 recorded me getting in a rear collision and that footage was instrumental in proving my case
